The Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) is offering a $2,500* hiring bonus to dedicated and hardworking team players interested in joining our Highway Maintenance and Construction teams, and who are willing and able to operate a snowplow! New hires who begin employment after November 7, 2022, and hold their CDL at the time of hire, will receive a pro-rated bonus.

New hires who obtain their CDL after hire are also eligible for a pro-rated bonus. If you don’t already have your CDL, we’ll provide free / paid training and support you every step of the way! Bonuses will be paid out in installments every pay period from November 2022 through April 2023.

Pay rate of $16.626 to start as a Construction Technician I. Employees may be hired as or will be promoted into a Construction Technician II position at a rate of $19.

125 upon possessing a CDL, acquiring necessary certifications, and demonstrating skills.

Examples of Work

Examples of work that you will perform with on the job training :

Surveying work includes :

  • Perform or assist in preliminary surveys or Right of Way surveys
  • Assist in working on a survey crew to utilize construction plans, staking data, and cross section data to stake out locations at highway construction sites.
  • Document daily activities in a field book for both preliminary and construction related work, and plot cross-sections and reduce survey notes.
  • Use various tools to clear for line of sight for a prelim or a construction job.
  • Operate total stations, levels, GPS, robotic total stations, and digital levels.
  • Measurement of elevations using survey leveling rod and optical level.
  • Measure distances using tape measures, measuring chains, and electronic measuring equipment.

Snow Removal Operations :

  • Will receive training in order to acquire a Class B CDL.
  • Will be trained to operate snow removal equipment.

Work Environment :

  • The majority of your workday will be spent in the outdoors during the course of a construction project.
  • Environmental conditions can and will include : dust, heat, cold, sun, wind, and exposure to vehicular traffic.
  • Must have the ability to traverse uneven surfaces and clear obstacles to navigate the work environment.
  • Must be able to report to work outside scheduled work hours for snow and other highway emergencies, including nights and weekends.
  • Employees are provided with the necessary safety equipment and training.
  • Employees are provided with, or are on a crew with, a state furnished vehicle for travel to and from their assigned projects and are directly responsible for the care of their assigned vehicle.
  • Employees are provided the necessary materials and equipment to perform assigned duties and directly responsible for the care of those items.

Qualifications / Requirements

REQUIREMENTS : Must be at least 18 years of age and have a valid driver’s license.

PREFERRED : Valid Class A or B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with tanker endorsement. Post High School training in survey or construction is desirable.

OTHER : Must possess a valid Class A or B CDL within 6 months of employment. Required training and costs associated with obtaining the CDL will be paid for by the Department.

Regular and reliable attendance is required. This position may require overnight travel.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Must have strong organizational skills, strong math skills and computer skills, and be able to multitask. Must be able to obtain material testing certification such as ACI.

Must be able to lift up to 60 pounds, climb, bend, stoop, walk long distances and work long hours, possibly weekends, in outdoor temperature extremes.

Must be able to report to work within 30 minutes of notification under normal conditions.

Bonus amounts will be pro-rated for teammates hired on or after November 7, 2022, and for teammates hired without a CDL.
